Coleman addresses seven major issues:
1. Anti-Drugs,Alcohol,and Tobacco
He encourages students to be leaders and not succumb to the pressures of doing drugs. He explains how drugs effect the mind, body, and soul. He warns teenagers about the dangers of underage drinking and not being responsible. He warns about the chances of obtaining cancer with prolonged use of Tobacco. He warns that the best solution is to never start consuming Tobacco. It`s easy to start but the hardest feat is to stop.
2. Character Traits
Emphasized traits are respect, responsibility, self control, perseverance, teamwork, trustworthiness, citizenship, caring, leadership, and fairness. He stresses the importance of respect: most importantly parents, principals, teachers, coaches, or anyone that has authority over them.
3. Motivation on Being Successful
He helps the kids to understand that indeed he is a true success story. Standing only 5ft.-7in. tall, he has been able to do something that most short people aren't supposed to do and that is to play professional basketball. He speaks about the fact that he was discouraged as a youngster to play basketball because of his height and how he persevered and defied the odds and became successful. Coming from the small town of Heflin, Louisiana, he explains how he was discovered by the Harlem Globetrotters by sending them a video tape of himself to their management. He was invited to their 1993 Training Camp where a pre-existing injury was aggravated but he redeemed himself and sent a video to Todd Davis, the Chairman and President of the World Famous Harlem Wizards in Secaucus, New Jersey, who signed him. He ended up spending two great seasons with them. Ultimately, Coleman has always wanted to become an entrepreneur while making his own impact in the entertainment business and he accomplishes this by changing the lives of kids all over the country through the Buffy Coleman Basketball Show since 1998. What a success story!!
4. Excellence in the Classroom
He encourages students to be on time, behave in the classroom, pay attention to the teachers and develop good study habits at home. He explains that the smarter you are in the classroom the more prepared they'll be in life. He explains how each one of the core subjects will be used in life in the real world. He stresses that if they drop out of school all of their dreams will end.
He explains to students the importance of developing listening and communication skills, and how it is a form of education. He tells them the importance of being observant of anything that they want to gain knowledge of, and how networking and communicating with a successful mentor, can help them to learn a valuable skill or trade.
He reminds students the importance of concentration on questions while testing Or just concentrating on the lesson being taught. He encourages students to read their favorite literature each day because it helps ones comprehension, expands vocabulary, and sharpens pronunciation. Exercise the brain
to increase mental capacity.
5. Anti-Bullying/Anti-Violence
Emphasis that bullying starts and end with the bully. Make the difference by no more bullying. He encourages fellow students to report bullying to higher authority. He encourages classmates to not laugh with the bullies but instead convince the bully that it`s not cool to bully. Bullied students are encouraged to stand up for themselves and make a change because statistics prove that ignoring a bully doesn't work. Students should always have self-control and a good attitude because a bad attitude with impulse reactions can lead one into a fight which can lead to prison or dying.
6. Staying fit
Buffy encourages the promotion of eating more green leaf vega tables and fruit. He encourages students to do some form of exercise of their choice at least one hour each day.
7. Parental Involvement
The assembly can be done during school hours but can be tied in as a parental involvement program. Parents are invited to the program in which Coleman urges parents to become more involved in their kids day to day lives. He encourages parents to participate in school functions and activities. Always stay in touch with the teachers to enquire about a students progress. He encourages parents to attend all parent teacher conferences if possible. He tries to get the parents to understand that much of their kids success will be determined by the parents influence. Always know that a kids biggest role models should be the parents. If a parent don`t take the initiative to be a good role model the students will look elsewhere for what maybe negative influence.
